Why Representation and Inclusivity Matter in Fertility Care

More LGBTQ+ individuals and couples are pursuing fertility treatment than ever before.

However, early fertility care was not shaped with LGBTQ+ patients in mind. While access to treatment has expanded, this history still informs the day-to-day experience of many LGBTQ+ individuals and families navigating fertility care. For fertility care to be truly equitable, LGBTQ+ patients must feel seen, respected, and genuinely supported throughout their experience.

Limited Representation in Early Fertility Care

For many years, fertility care was largely centered on heterosexual couples experiencing infertility. As a result, the clinical language used in appointments, the assumptions embedded in intake forms, and the educational material left in waiting rooms often don’t reflect the lived realities of LGBTQ+ patients seeking care.

Moments like filling out a form that asks for a "husband" and "wife”, or having a provider assume a partner's role based on gender orientation, can quickly become draining. Fertility treatment is emotionally demanding for anyone, and LGBTQ+ individuals should not have the additional burden of constantly clarifying their identities or working to make their needs heard.

How Inclusivity Shapes the Patient Experience

Research has consistently shown that feeling respected and understood by providers improves communication, builds trust, and leads to better engagement with care. The inverse is also true. When pronouns are ignored, partners are not acknowledged, or concerns are not validated, it creates friction that affects the entire treatment experience. Treatment is only effective when patients feel comfortable asking questions, communicating their needs, and feel invited to actively participate in their care.

Creating Fertility Spaces Where All Patients Feel Seen

Inclusive fertility care isn't about declaring a general non-discrimination policy or simply featuring a rainbow flag on promotional material. Instead, it's a collection of practices that ensures LGBTQ+ patients feel genuinely considered. This can include using gender-neutral language in forms, communications, and clinical documentation, as well as asking patients how they'd like to be addressed. Most importantly, it's a commitment to constantly learn and listen to LGBTQ+ patients, rather than making assumptions based on gender identity or sexual orientation.

How BUNDL Supports Inclusive Fertility Care

Supporting all family structures in the fertility space also includes accounting for the distinct needs of LGBTQ+ patients. In addition to needing multiple cycles like anyone else pursuing IVF, queer couples and individuals may also require additional services such as donor gametes, surrogacy, or fertility preservation — all of which can lead to significantly more expense. For fertility care to be truly inclusive, patients must not only feel respected within the clinical experience itself, but also supported through the financial realities that treatment can bring.

At BUNDL Fertility, we offer multi-cycle bundles at a single upfront cost because everyone pursuing parenthood deserves access to care that honors the full complexity of their journey.
